Classic Greek Vegetarian lunch:
Stuffed Tomatoes with Greek Salad

Today I'm guest blogging again, this time over at Simple Living and Eating, a blog written by Diane Balch about simple living and healthy eating with the Mediterranean diet.

While we freeze our toes off here in wintery Melbourne, Greece is basking in Summer sunshine where people all over the country will be enjoying Yemistes Domates (stuffed tomatoes) and Greek Salad. These are the two recipes I've featured today on Diane's blog.

Go take a look at Simple Living and Eating for lots of recipe ideas, weekly menu plans and to learn more about the philosophy behind healthy eating, the Mediterranean way :)

I will be back again soon with three very exciting little Greek dishes that I've been experimenting with, using the humble and often overlooked turnip!

I'm linking today's post once again with Veggie Mama's endlessly inspiring Meatless Mondays link-up. Hop on over to see how she made perfectly crispy barbecued potatoes.

  2. That salad looks so pretty in the red bowl. Is that Moroccan? It's beautiful crockery. And beautiful salad of course! I'm heading over to Simple Living blog now.

    1. I'm so glad someone noticed the bowl! Yes, it's Moroccan (I have way too many of these bowls in my cupboard!). I love the hand-painted detail and the colours are just brilliant. The red one is my favourite :)

  4. This is a classic Greek dish for summer. Usually we make tomatoes and green peppers stuffed together in the same pan. Lovely post on quest blog, love that you give the story of Greek diet.

Sorry Lisa, will be delayed 2-3 days to send grandmother's recipe. I try to write everything in detail and make a correct translation so it takes me some time.
    See you soon

    1. Yes, I often make yemistes with green peppers as well but in Limnos the garden tomatoes are so beautiful (the green peppers not so beautiful!) and I love all the red tomatoes together in the baking dish.

There is no rush for the pastry recipe Mina. I really appreciate that you are taking the time to write it out for me. Thank you so much :)

  5. I had to laugh when I read your post - yesterday I sat down to read a magazine and it was advertising 'traditional Greek stuffed eggplant' and 'traditional Greek stuffed tomatoes.' So all excited I flipped straight to the pages and found myself slightly disappointed and mumbling, to no one in particular, why does everything have to be stuffed with lamb!? Literally two hours later I read your blog and found my alternative!

    1. Interestingly, lamb is almost considered a luxury item in Greece, but elsewhere in the world people have made an association with lamb and Greek food, probably because of the massive popularity of souvlakis. But Greek food is so much more than souvlakis!!! (and even souvlakis can be made without meat!). That is funny Emily, that you found this post right after seeing those meat-laiden recipes!

  6. Your photos are amazing! those stuffed tomatoes look gorgeous, nice and soft with a perfectly cooked skin.

    1. Thanks Nicole! Normally I don't like skins on cooked tomatoes, but these need their skins to stay together. Somehow though, when cooked this way (in a bath of liquid) the skins end up quite soft and palatable!
